Buying Cables: OEM Versus Retail

For those who aren’t in the know with the acronym, OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. For the hardware sellers in the retail world, this would be in the same vein as buying directly from the manufacturer. You’re not buying from Circuit City, you are buying from Samsung — such is a general idea. This can be really nice because it reduces cost considerably. These offers often come from the cable supplier as well when referring to cable hardware.

Buying OEM products has been hot, even more recently for the average consumer. It was made known more so, not really by the cable industry, but by the software one — where you would see offers for operating systems go for half price you would see sold retail. So with all great deals there is generally a catch. The following will have a bit of the advantages and some of the disadvantages of buying typical cables and custom cables alike.

OEM Advantages and Disadvantages

The slang term for OEM products is often termed as the “white box” version. An apt name, since it’s devoid of most consumer package marketing. But the advantage of going white box for cables is that they are pretty cheap. Anyone that knows when setting up a sound room, putting together a patch bay or the like will run a pretty price tag for cabling. That’s why finding OEM sourced products are so valuable.

For instance if you were running a business selling high-definition digital equipment, a good mark up cable to use would be an HDMI T.V. cable. So if you were negotiating with the cable supplier, getting a good OEM cable shipment in bulk you can take those cables and sell them retail for a considerable markup, as you would see being done in many retail locations.

In addition, if you are dealing with the supplier in such a manner, you can often have them make custom cables made for special projects.

Since OEM is geared for the reseller, sometimes it’s not necessarily good for the average consumer. If you don’t know what you are doing, what you are getting into then buying a cable for the wrong reason may leave you hung out to dry. In other words, there is not much for support. It’s like buying a car without warranty.

The private consumer who just wants one item may want to get the cables that are prepackaged rather than sold by themselves. Warranties are usually put in the bundled product rather than individually.

The bottom line is that if you are a legitimate business person who is in the know verses someone who just wants to go cheap then buying OEM could be either a blessing or a curse.

Resource Management using Microsoft Project

Management of resources is a key aspect of project management. Microsoft Project is able to assist in the complex issue of managing resources by tracking their progress, highlighting allocation issues and relating all this information to the overall status of the project.

Defining resources

In simple terms, resources can be separated into three groups: work, material and cost. A work resource is anyone or anything that works on a task and is tracked according to time spent. A material resource refers to things that are consumed by a task. Microsoft Project assumes that material resources are available in unlimited supplies. Cost resources refer to ancillary costs that are not directly associated with work and materials, such as expenses.

When inputting resource data into Microsoft Project, there are several other resource categories to consider. Enterprise resources refer to those resources at the disposal of an organisation and can therefore be used in multiple projects. Non-enterprise resources, or local resources, are only available for use within a specific project. Generic resources are used to identify specific skills that are required for a project when the specific details of the resource are as yet unknown.

Assigning Resources

Microsoft Project offers two methods for entering resource data directly: the Resource Sheet or the Resource Information dialog box. The next step is to assign resources to a specific task. The benefit of this step is that it is possible to see how long it will take to complete a task, how much it will cost and who is responsible for completing that task. One resource can be assigned to several different tasks and one task can be assigned several different resources.

Microsoft Project is able to estimate the duration of a task based on the availability of each resource. If additional resources are assigned to a particular task, Microsoft Project can calculate how much less time is required for task completion. This is referred to as effort-driven scheduling and is the default option. There are occasions where it is not appropriate to use effort-driven scheduling for a task. For example, a meeting will take the same amount of time to complete (as long as it stays focussed) regardless of the number of individuals attending.

Resource Allocation Problems

It is important to ensure that all resources have been appropriately assigned to tasks to ensure a successful outcome. Microsoft Project provides several ways of doing this. By looking at the Resource Sheet it is possible to identify whether resources have been under allocated or over allocated for a specific time period. An alternative way of seeing the same information but in a graphical format is to select the Resource Graph option.

By attending Microsoft Project training it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of resource allocation and how best to use this software to achieve successful outcomes.

Fix Corrupt Registry the Easy Way

Computer speed has always been a major concern with PC owners, and even more so with new technology constantly demanding more out of people’s computers. If you don’t regularly clean and fix your registry, your computer will start to become bogged down and become very slow. Eventually, it may slow down to a halt!

This isn’t an ideal situation because people use computers for everything, and if your computer starts to get really slow when working on an important project, it can be frustrating. One reason cleaning the registry is so important is because a corrupt registry increases the stress on the hard drive because it must look through several possible operations just to find the right one it needs to executing.

Free registry cleaners

There are several programs you can buy and download that can fix your registry. Many people look for free registry-fixing programs in a quest to save money. However, free registry scanners aren’t really free. They will repair some problems and then they will ask if you want to continue to repair your registry.

If you say yes, the program will ask for your credit card number. In short, free ones end up being more expensive than regular repair programs that are more upfront about not being free. All registry cleaners will scan for free and then need to be bought before they will actually do a repair to your registry. However, this is normal operating procedure.

Supercharge your computer with an optimizer

When searching for a good registry-fixing program, it’s important to know what features to look for. One of the most important features you should look for is one that will also optimize your registry. This is important because an optimizer will give your computer even more speed than a regular registry repair program will.

Also, you should make sure the cleaner/optimizer is a reputable one. The best way to find out this information is by recommendation. Advertisements are one thing, but if someone has actually used it and is able tell you how it worked, it would be a big plus!
Another little sidebar is this fact.

There are a lot of registry programs that were good at one time but now, they are yesterday’s news. So, when you are getting recommendations, make sure someone isn’t telling you about one they used a few years ago, as this one may no longer be a top tier cleaner. Of course, if you are getting a cleaner/optimizer, you know you’ll be getting the latest thing.

We all love our computers, and hate them when they don’t act the way we want them to. One of the best ways to keep your computer in tip-top shape is to regularly scan the registry for errors and then let the program repair any it may find.

Remember, a computer should be scanned for viruses and spyware, as well. However, once removed these things leave false entries in the registry. So, to finish the job, use a good registry repair program and if it includes an optimizer, your computer will be back up to speed and then some!

Everything You Need To Know About Fibre Optic Cables

Fibre optic technology has done a great deal to change the world as we know it. It can be said that fibre optic cables have revolutionised the communications industry and made the internet the tool that it is today. In short the fibre optic cables guide light along the length of a cable and this light is converted into information that can be interpreted quickly into something that we can use.

The transformation of these light signals into information that we can see is converted with a complex use of applied science and engineering. Scientists have developed the theories that govern the data transfer and engineers have applied it to a tangible situation.

The fibre optic cable is utilised in thousands of different situations and the cable has a number of benefits over conventional cabling. The primary benefit associated with fibre optic cables is that they make the transfer of information extremely quick and they can also transfer enormous amounts of data.

The cables can also be made to transfer data over extremely long distances without a loss in the quality of the information that is transferred. Another fundamental benefit of the fibre optic cable is that they do not experience electrical interference. Metal wires often experience loss as a result of electromagnetic interference whereas the fibre optic cable does not suffer.

Fibre optic cables have thousands of different uses and are used in communication systems such as sensors. The word optic refers to the presence of light in the cable and it makes reference to the fact that at the core of the cable there is a system that allows light to pass through. The process that the light passes through the cable is called total internal reflection and involves a number of tiny mirror like pieces that bounce the light rapidly down the length of the cable. It does this in such a way that the light signal can be read. The cable guides the light along and is referred to as a ‘waveguide’. The way in which the cable transfers the light makes a difference to how the signal is transferred in the end and the message that it delivers.

There are a number of different types of fibre optic cable that are supported by different optical fibres and the different types support what is known as different propagation paths. Multimode fibres (MMF) are fibres those that support a number of different paths. These allow for many different types of messages to be sent. Single mode fibres (SMF) on the other hand are generally more limited and are used in systems that extend up to 200 metres. Multimode cables can be used when more power is required.

The major downfall of fibre optic cables is that it is difficult to connect them to one another or to communications devices. The cables have to be cut and connected with great precision so that they can be reconnected accurately. Unlike metal cables which are very easy to connect. The fibre optic cables need to be fused together effectively so that the ends meet correctly. The process is done using an electrical arc. The fibre optic cables require special connectors so that they can be joined with one another easily.

Shaun Parker has been involved in the networking equipment and fibre optic industry for several years.

How To Completely Get Rid of Spyware Infections

The best way to get rid of spyware infections completely is not to get them in the first place. You can prevent a great amount of spyware from infecting your system by simply being careful with what you install and how you install it.

But once spyware has made its way into your system, you need to remove it. The best way is by using software designed to remove spyware, called anti-spyware.

Anti-spyware, once installed will identify all the issues your computer might have with regards to spyware by a simple (but very thorough) system scan.

The first scan may take a while, but subsequent scans won’t be as bad. The reason the first scan takes so long is because you may have had your computer for quite some time and it may be full of all kinds of spyware and junk that you don’t need.

Once the anti-spyware program finishes scanning the system for spyware, it presents the results to you. It will group these results in several ways, such as the level of danger posed by certain spyware.
It then allows you to choose what you want the anti-spyware program to do with these results. You can choose to remove everything it found, or you may want to keep certain things that may be part of a program that you need or want to use (this may be unlikely but can happen from time to time).

The beauty of it is that anti-spyware programs also give you an opportunity to undo whatever it has done. So if eliminating something found by the anti-spyware program causes you to lose something you needed, you can simply go back in and re-enable whatever it is. It is, in most cases, totally reversible.

Spyware is a type of program or other process that cannot only harm your computer but can compromise the privacy and security of your family and personal data.
Do not take a chance with these precious commodities!? Take the initiative with your computer, and install anti-spyware software.

If you are unsure where to begin, do some research online and you will find out more about which programs are out there and how different ones will function.
Perhaps the more expensive ones are not necessary for your needs. Perhaps they are. You decide.

One thing that is unquestionable is that anti-spyware software will give you the protection you need when using a computer connected to the Internet (and that’s basically every computer these days, right?).

It can also prevent very serious threats to you personally such as identity theft and fraud caused by the leaking of personal and private data.

Tools From Advanced Excel Courses: Goal Seek and Solver

Excel has a number of powerful tools for numerical analysis that can reduce complicated problems into fairly simple answers. Two of these that are covered in advanced Excel courses are Goal Seek and Solver.

Goal Seek: Looking For a Specific Answer

Goal Seek is the tool to use when you know the answer to an equation but don’t know the input values to put out that answer.

Consider a simple example. You sell 100 units of a product per week for $10 each, giving you weekly revenue of $1,000. You want to increase your revenue to $1,200 per week while keeping the price constant. You would put this information into your spreadsheet then use Goal Seek to vary production in order to produce the desired revenue, revealing that you need to increase production to 120 units per week.

That’s a deliberately trivial example that doesn’t actually require this tool, but it illustrates how Goal Seek works. An advanced Excel course would use a more involved example such as air resistance.

A moving object’s acceleration is affected by air resistance which in turn is affected by velocity which in turn is affect by acceleration. The problem of how much acceleration is required to accelerate a body to a specific speed in a certain time involves more than simple division. Goal Seek would iterate through the formula, trying different acceleration values until the desired time was reached.

Solver: Optimizing Your Objective

Sometimes the user doesn’t need a specific answer, but rather the best answer. Solver is the tool introduced in advanced Excel courses that is able to minimize or maximize an objective.

Let’s say your company produces a popular toy in three factories. Each factory has different production and distribution costs as well as production times and capacities. Christmas is approaching and you need to know how to produce 10,000 units within the next 30 days at the lowest cost.

Or perhaps your organization is considering several projects over the next year. Current staffing won’t allow all projects to be completed, so which ones would provide the best return on the investment of employee time?

Problems for Solver have multiple inputs to vary and those inputs are constrained to some range of values. You can’t expect your employees to put in 100 hours per week nor can you expect them to be satisfied putting in only 5 hours. The factories can only produce so many toys and no more.

Once you define the problem, Solver varies all inputs to find the optimal result. This result is going to either be the minimum, as in production costs, or the maximum, which would be the goal for return on investment.

Learning about these two tools in advanced Excel courses gives a new range of numeric analysis options to your employees, and that translates to better business decisions.

MS Access Top Tips: Takeaways From Microsoft Access Advanced Training

Of all the Microsoft products, Access is the one that most often requires outside training. It’s not hard to understand typing text into Word or plugging numbers into Excel, but even experienced computer professionals require Access training.

Often it is not enough to take an introductory course. For most users of Microsoft Access, advanced training is mandatory and even that is no substitute for experience. Here are a few tips that even many experienced users don’t know.

Database Design

Simply sitting down and planning their applications on paper before ever touching the computer could solve most of the problems people have when designing databases. Designing a large project on they fly while sitting at the keyboard is doomed to fail. You may spend hours trying to fix problems that ten minutes of planning could have avoided.

Never work on the production database. Work on a separate copy, the prototype, so that when you make a critical error (and we all do) you don’t destroy all of the company’s information. Only once the prototype is finished and well tested should it be put out live to other users. Some other pearls of wisdom from Microsoft Access advanced training to remember are to clearly understand all of your fields and relationships, choose naming convention for all elements and stick to them, never set up a database where users can edit fields directly, and always use forms.

Code Writing

Microsoft Access advanced training is where people learn to write SQL and VBA code. This gives them the ability to create powerful databases. It also gives them the ability to really mess things up. Document all code with comments. Don’t document outside the application since those documents will inevitably be lost. Never write code with the idea that other developers or users will be able to come to you and ask what the code does. You may no longer be available, have moved on from a job or department, or just not have the time to explain.

Look at other people’s code for inspiration. You can even use the code in your application if the author’s usage guidelines allow it. Before using it, understand how it works. You will learn how to code better in the future and you will avoid unpleasant surprises.

Write custom error handlers so the users don’t get unintelligible error message that will just confuse and frustrate them. Additionally, don’t use SendKeys, Smart Codes, or GoTo. Very skilled database programmers may be able to make exceptions to this rule, but usually they just lead to bad code and future problems.

The Most Important Rule of All

You probably learned this in Microsoft Access advanced training. You may have learned it in introductory training and will most likely learn it again in the future. You may have even learned it the hard way when all of your data disappeared. It is the rule that even people who know better frequently violate: Keep regular backups!

Back up not only the production database but any prototypes you are working on. Backup your databases often and occasionally restore the backups to ensure they are working properly.

How to Fix Registry Problem Symptoms in Three Quick and Easy Steps

If you are frustrated with your PC performance issues and must fix registry problem symptoms immediately, you will find the needed information below to make the process easy.

It is vital to repair and maintain your Windows registry as it is the database for all system files and user preferences. Over time the registry can become seriously oversized and require a cleaning to continue efficient operations.

Not Sure that the Registry is the Problem for You?

The following symptoms can show the need to fix registry problem errors: Slow, crashing, or freezing computer, delayed response times, trouble booting or constant rebooting, challenges loading or removing software programs, a prior virus, spyware, malware, and adware scan with no detection or repair, and the Blue Screen of Death (blue screen with white letters).

If any or many of the above are common problems for you, it would be wise to try registry repair software to fix registry problems immediately.

Follow These Steps and You Will Be Running Like New Again in 10 Minutes or Less:

Step One: Download the Free Scan Feature of the Software

If you download registry repair software, the quality products offers a free scan that you can utilize to see if errors are present before paying for the repair portion of the process. Download one (or more if you want side by side error counts) and make sure that the registry is indeed an issue for you.

If errors do exist, move on to step two. If not, you can save your money and hold off on registry repair if you would like.

Step Two: Purchase the Repair Function in the Same Software

Once the scan is complete and errors are found, the same software will offer a purchase option to repair the errors. Make sure that the purchase comes with a one year license (not a one time use). This will allow you to maintain the registry over the next year for the same price.

Once you purchase this feature, the repair takes seconds. It should detail out the exact file names of the files that must be repaired.

Step Three: Restart Your Computer

In order for changes to save and apply, you must restart your system. You should notice great performance again and your symptoms will have dissipated.

The longest part of the process to fix registry problem files is the download itself. It truly is an easy and quick process once you know which registry repair software you would like to use.

The best registry repair software products include both repair and optimization features in the same download.

They also include automatic back up of files, good customer support files, evidence cleaners, junk file removers, explanation of each scanning feature available, and defragmentation of the registry and hard drive files. The more advanced products also offer Internet Explorer plug in removers and other browser and system optimization options.

Schedule Your Time Better With A New Appointment Calendar

Whether you are a lawyer, doctor, hair stylist, event coordinator or some other small business owner with appointments to make and keep, your business would probably run smoother if you used a new kind of appointment calendar for scheduling your time.

If your business is up and running, you probably already have a some way to schedule patients, appointments or meetings into the day, but there are a couple new features on some appointment calendars that make them easier to use and save you time.

Patient Self-Scheduling
In most offices, the receptionist spends a lot of time just scheduling appointments. One of the easiest ways to save your office staff a little time is to invest in an appointment calendar that patients or customers can also view online and use to schedule their own appointments. This will eliminate the lengthy process of coordinating the personal schedules of patients with open time-slots in your office.

Accessibility
Web based appointment calendars are convenient because you can access them from any web browser. This means that you can view your schedule for the next day or the next week wherever you are and you’ll be able to work other things into your schedule more easily.

Color Coding
Color coding is one of the clearest ways to organize information. For example, if there are three or four doctors working in the same office, assign each doctor a different color and they can see their appointment schedule at a glance rather than reading through every entry to find their name. Or, if you are the only person running your business, you can use color coding to tag different kinds of tasks instead.

Automatic Email Reminders
Instead of having someone hunt you down to deliver appointment reminders, have them sent right to you via automatic email reminders. These reminders can also be sent to your customers to save your receptionist more time on the phone and to decrease the number of missed appointments.

Recurring Appointments
If you have meetings or appointments that fall on the same time every day, week or month, good appointment calendars can save you the work of manually entering them in by scheduling recurring appointments for as long as you want with a few short clicks.

If you do find a company that provides appointment calendars with all of these features, make sure that they are affordable and flexible. For example, you want to avoid lengthy contracts and costly set-up fees.

Simpliflex is one company that provides an appointment calendar with all these convenient features at an affordable price. To learn more about their products and pricing, visit their website at http://simpliflex.com. The Author, Art Gib, is a freelance writer.

Choose to Fix Window Registry Challenges Now: A Step-By-Step Guide

You may need to fix Window registry errors if you are experiencing the following symptoms: Slow computer, freezing or delayed responses, crashes, trouble loading or removing software programs, having to reboot your computer often, trouble starting or slow start computer, and the infamous Blue Screen of Death when your system has had enough.

Why is it Important to Clean and Repair the Registry?

The Windows registry is a storehouse for critical files and settings on Windows-based PCs. This includes files and settings for hardware, software, and user preferences.

As you can see, the registry is an important part of your computer. This database becomes larger in size and corrupted as programs are added and removed from your computer including software programs and drivers.

Over time, these registry errors usually cause slow and unpredictable operation of your PC and can cause performance problems that cannot be detected or repaired by virus scans, including spyware, adware, and malware.

So, my answer is a definite yes to the question of how important it is to clean and repair the registry.

What Steps Will Fix Window Registry Problems Quickly and Easily?

Step One: Ensure the Registry is the Problem

The section above offers a pretty good idea of what you will encounter if registry errors are present. If you are still doubtful to whether or not this is your challenge, continue to the next steps below.

Step Two: Do a Free Scan to Ensure that Errors are Detected

Most quality software programs that fix Window registry problems offer a free download and scan. This will allow you to see what errors you are having, what files and categories are impacted, and will offer an explanation of what each feature does on the scan tool.

The most important objective of this step is to determine whether or not the registry is indeed the problem. You can also download more than one software program to compare the errors found (for accuracy). Make sure to download and do the free scan on each before fixing the problems (or you will not have a good side-by-side comparison).

Step Three: Choose the Repair Feature in the Software

The repair feature in the software will be presented after errors are detected. This is a fast process but does require payment first. Make sure that the software comes with a one year license before you purchase it. You will want to have the ability to maintain the registry throughout the year, not just for a one time use.

The repair itself only takes seconds. The download and scan are the most time consuming but the entire process is truly under 10 minutes.

Once you fix Window registry challenges, restart your computer for the changes to save and take effect. Take note of how much more efficient your computer runs once you finish this process.

The Difference Of Adware, Spyware And Anti-virus

Adware, spyware and computer virus are major nuisances for computer users. Let’s differentiate the three.

Spyware is software that does not intentionally harm your computer. What they do is that they create pathways wherein someone else aside from the computer owner can communicate with the computer. Normally spywares record the various types of web sites you visit which are later used by web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups.

This is why spyware are usually frowned upon and greatly avoided. They are more intrusive than adware. Spyware have their own separate executable programs which allow them to record your keystrokes, scan files on your hard disks and look at other applications that you use including but not limited to chat programs, cookies and Web browser settings.

The spyware then will send the information that it had gathered to the spyware author. The agent will then use this information for advertising and marketing purposes. They even sell the information to advertisers and other parties.

Adware, on the other hand, are more legitimate form of freeware. Similar to spyware, adwares are advertising materials which are packaged into a software or program and are installed automatically once that particular program or software is added into the computer system. Some forms of adware, on the other hand, download advertising contents as a particular application is being utilized. It is quite unfortunate that most of the adware programs take the form of spywares that is they track and report user information to program authors.

Some signs of spyware infections include pop-up ads that seem to be not related to the site you are viewing. More often than not, spyware pop-ups are advertisements about adult contents. Also if you notice your computer slowing down, there’s a big chance that spywares and its other components have found their way in your operating system. When the Windows desktop also takes a longer time to load, its best to scan your computer for possible spyware infections.

Meanwhile, viruses are destructive form of software. They were purely designed and created for one purpose alone: to wreck havoc to your computer. They destroy whatever they come in contact to and will initiate self replication and infect as many components of the computer’s operating system or network as possible.

Nowadays, a lot of anti-virus software also provides spyware and adware scanning and removal utilities. Some programs, however, are focused on located and deleting or destroying spyware and adware programs. Whether is an anti-virus software or a anti-spyware dedicated scanner, they both search your computer and identify any spyware and virus installed on your system.

They then remove it as well as their components located in the system registry among other places in your computer. It is therefore, good to regularly update your virus or spyware scanner to ensure that your computer is protected from the thousands of spyware and viruses in the internet. Never be fooled from ads that claim that their products only contain adware.

These adware maybe spyware in disguised and are just waiting to be deployed for them to gather your information. Learn to setup firewall systems and always block pop-up blockers to minimize computer infection and ensure the security of all your computer files.

Are You Facing Computer Espionage?

You can find spies and covert operations running undetected within your personal computer system as you use your computer and the Internet.

Have you noticed a suspicious slow down of your computer’s processing without any particular reason? Are you bombarded by unsolicited pop up ads that indiscriminately appear whether you are running a program or not? These symptoms may continue to happen despite checking your system and running your recently updated anti virus program to run diagnostics on your computer.

Unless you run the correct program, you will not be able to detect the real problem in your system: spyware and adware.

Adware are unsolicited programs that usually come bundled with freeware or shareware. Yes, sometimes things that seem to be good to be true usually come with unwanted invisible strings attached. Companies usually pay freeware or shareware creators to be able to capitalize and prey on unsuspecting individuals who download these programs. Adware cause unsolicited pop up advertisements in your computer and in severe cases, adware causes pop up advertisements to pop up soon as you boot your system.

Spyware on the other hand is more covert and usually undetected in your system until you run an anti spyware program. Spyware is used exactly to spy on you. In relatively mild cases, spyware is used to track your Internet browsing habits so that the spyware can report your preferences to build a marketing profile. This means that as you go about your Internet business, you are under surveillance and your basic right to privacy is impinged upon.

In severe cases though, certain spyware better labeled as malware, are used for criminal purposes and can steal keywords and other sensitive information based on your computer and Internet usage.

For instance, malware can take note of your keystrokes or take note of your credit card number and other vital information that can be used to steal your identity and generally put your security at risk.It is said that 9 out 10 computers are infected with spyware and to make sure that you are not part of statistical majority, you need run an adware and spyware cleaner to detect unwanted security and privacy breach within your system.

There are a lot of reliable adware and spyware cleaners in available to remove these unwanted programs in your computer. You must note however that some adware and spyware are intricately bundled within their parent programs that cleaning them out from your computer will inadvertently disable the legitimate programs they infect. This consequence is a necessary evil to clean your computer of unwanted adware and spyware. You should choose an adware and spyware cleaner that can also work proactively by preventing future accidental installation of these nuisances.

Adware and spyware cleaners work like your anti virus programs except that these particular cleaners target adware and spyware.Considering the trouble adware and spyware creators take to ensure that extracting installed adware and spyware from your computer system will be difficult, the adage about an ounce of prevention being worth more than a pound of cure applies in this situation. Be sure to install a reliable and secure adware and spyware cleaner in your system to remove existing security and privacy risks as well as preventing future hassle.

Dallas Area Wired to Fight Disaster

Disaster agencies in the Dallas area are getting high-tech with their network solutions. The city’s police and fire departments are able to share information about disasters when they occur to coordinate efforts. The shared network will also connect to the U.S. Transportation and Security Administration, U.S. Customer and Border Protection and Southwest Airlines Co. Dallas disaster recovery sources can communicate with all of the local emergency teams. The new system, called Emergency Response Network (ERN), was the first of its kind launched by a major metropolitan city.

The network system was put together by a private vendor that was employed by the city through a bid system. One of the unique systems that were placed was a universal frequency that is sent from the network that travels as an AM radio signal. This is one of the routes that the new network uses as a pathway to keep all teams in check.

A little while ago the Downtown Emergency Response Team (DERT) put this new network emergency plan to use. A recent windstorm knocked down portions of a water tower on top of a downtown building in the business district. In fear of the whole tower collapsing, the Dallas disaster recovery system sent out AM radio announcements through an AM radio signal that all facilities can pick up. The details were also relayed through the systems network and sent via email to emergency worker pagers, PDAs, cell phone text and the like.

With that alert system, police were able to stop traffic flow to two downtown Dallas thoroughfares. And due to the effectiveness of the new communication systems the transportation district could route traffic through alternate streets and walkways. The details were not only relayed to folks in the public sector, but private Dallas managed services, engineers and business owners alike were given the details of the interference blow by blow.

9/11 and Better Emergency Communication

So in the wake of the terrorism and large scale natural disasters, the feds have put a lot of stock in emergency preparedness. With a nod to the Dallas area’s choice of tying in their communication systems, they were given nearly a million dollar grant from the department of homeland security. The subject or better preparedness in the wake of large-scale disaster became paramount after emergency agencies in New York tried to get their city response logistics in order but came upon a huge cluster of overwhelming problems after the trade centers were struck.

The actions taken by Dallas officials were praised by State Representative and Dallas native, Rep. Pete Sessions, claiming that this was a positive solution for one of the biggest problems the U.S. has in terms of emergency response. With the praise and money given the city and its network vendor still had to make due with preexisting hardware.

How To Find The Best Software Products

Just think without software nothing would work. It’s the be all and end all of how we interact with computers. Beyond the rather boring element of the operating system itself, I mean who wants to get excited about Windows Vista, software allows you to manage your music, edit your photos, write documents, view the web. It’s everywhere.

So what makes a good software package and what are the ones you should be using to do the task at hand? Here are some suggestions for both PC and Mac users:

Storing and managing photos

When it comes to storing and managing your photos on your computer there are lots of options both online and offline. Online there are a number of photo services such as Photobox or Kodak’s EasyShare gallery, including the newly launched Adobe Photoshop Express service, and that’s before you start looking at Flickr from Yahoo and Picasa from Google.

Offline and one of the best solutions for the PC is Adobe’s Photoshop Elements software. Simple yet effective there is plenty here for the digital photographer. The interface is clean and crisp and there are some really good features like the photo merge option and the flash based web galleries that will make this appeal to lots of people. On the Mac the best option for consumers is Apple’s own iPhoto application. Although you can now get Adobe’s elements for Mac, iPhoto does virtually everything you need including allowing you to make and publish your own book or website.

For Music

Chances are you have a large music collection and there are two really good music programs for the PC and the Mac to help you manage it. For the PC it’s the incumbent music application; Windows Media Player 10. The software will manage you music, let you connect it to virtually every MP3 player (apart from Apple’s iPod) to transfer songs and also is again virtually guaranteed to work with music subscription services (although again not with Apple’s iTunes) so you can buy tracks or rent tracks online. On the mac there is really only one option, Apple’s iTunes.

It allows you to manage your music, is the only player to work with the company’s iconic iPod MP3 player and also allows you to buy video and music through its iTunes store, which has recently become the number one music store in the US.

For the Office

Like storing and managing your photos, their are a number of solutions on and offline to help you write documents, manage spreadsheets and give presentations. Microsoft’s office for Windows and Mac is very impressive, offers lots of features and will get the job done. The trouble is that it’s also very expensive.

If budget is tight, as in non-existent then you can opt for Google’s online offering, which has the benefit of being able to be managed by a number of different workers at the same time. Alternative there is Open Office a free office application that offers a document writer, spreadsheet program and other bits and bobs so you can still write letters of resignation or find out much you’ve got in the bank.

For Surfing

Although there are plenty of browsers for surfing the web and the market leader is Microsoft’s Windows Internet Explorer you really want to be surfing the Internet using Mozilla’s Firefox. Firefox is an open source browser that allows you to bolt on third party applications it’s the way to surf the web quickly and effectively, and tab browsing, if you aren’t already using it, will revolutionise the way you surf the internet forever.
