Will Twitter Be Able to Stop Virus Attacks
Twitter is one of the fastest growing social networking sites around at the moment, Twitter was created in 2006 and started to get a lot of buzz from the word go. Twitter over the past year though has grown even faster due to being the first site to report breaking news and also celebrities using the site as a way to personally update their fans on the go.
But Twitter run into some problems when it was created, the people that made the site never expected it to be as successful as it was and the site could not meet up with the demand from the sheer amount of traffic that was hitting it on a daily basis and therefore the site suffered numerous outages.
A lot of people have indicated that Micro blogging is the communication tool of the future, but can Twitter handle the attention that it is currently getting? As mentioned above, the site took ages to rectify the problem and now things have got a whole lot worse when they got attacked by a worm called the Mikeyy. The worm’s job was simply to point users at a rival micro blogging site. It basically got into peoples profiles where is then posted a message to their followers telling them to visit the rival site.
The thing about this is that it was all done by a 17 year old, a very clever 17 year old, but that is not the point. Twitter have had millions of pounds worth of investment that has been pumped into their business, so a 17 year old hacking them for the simple reason of being bored is quite worrying. The guy called Mikeyy described how he carried out the attack: “I am the person who coded the XSS which then acted as a worm when it auto updated a users profile and status, which then infected other users who viewed their profile. I did this out of boredom, to be honest. I usually like to find vulnerabilities within websites and try not to cause too much damage, but start a worm or something to give the developers an insight on the problem and while doing so, promoting myself or my website.”
So what does that say about security? Twitter are going to face a lot more of this kind of thing in the future so they better get the right measures in place before they get completely hacked and taken down, you don’t see this type of thing happening to Google do you?
